We need Half and Consume 1.8 Earth

Finite Earth, Infinite Hope : Prof. Solanki’s Mission to Heal a Finite Planet

In a world increasingly consumed by overproduction, overconsumption, and overexploitation of natural resources, one man has chosen to dedicate his life entirely to reversing the course of climate disaster — Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki, a former professor at IIT Bombay and the founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation.

His message is clear and urgent:

“Climate is not changing, it has changed.”

Prof. Solanki’s work stands at the intersection of science, conscience, and civil action — a moral and practical call to save a planet that is rapidly reaching its ecological limits.

A Scientist Who Chose the Road Over the Lab

After years of academic contribution at IIT Bombay, Solanki made a life-altering decision: he resigned from his prestigious post to dedicate himself completely to the most critical challenge facing humanity — climate change.

He embarked on an 11-year-long journey across India called the Energy Swaraj Yatra, pledging not to return home until 2030. Living in a solar-powered bus that doubles as his home and classroom, he travels from village to village, city to city — spreading awareness about the climate crisis and inspiring individuals, institutions, and industries to act.

“I pledged not to return home for 11 years because the Earth itself has no home left if we don’t act now,” he says.

Over the past five years, his Yatra has covered 68,000 kilometers, reached four lakh people, and conducted over 1,600 talks on climate change, sustainability, and renewable energy.

Energy Swaraj: Power by the People, for the People

The foundation of Solanki’s vision lies in Energy Swaraj — the idea that energy should be produced and consumed locally, sustainably, and responsibly.

He believes that the use of carbon-based fuels has created the problem of climate change, and therefore, solar energy, when used appropriately, can offer the solution. But it’s not just about switching to solar panels — it’s about changing the very way we live and consume.

“Energy Swaraj is energy by local, for local. It is not just about solving the problem of energy — it is about creating jobs, strengthening local economies, empowering women, saving foreign exchange, and mitigating climate change.”

The Energy Swaraj Foundation is a not-for-profit movement that operates without government funding, relying instead on the collective participation of individuals and communities.

The Finite Earth Movement: Because We Need Half

At the heart of Solanki’s mission is a simple, profound idea — the Finite Earth Movement (FEM) and its central message:

“We need half — half the waste, half the travel, half the excess.”

Currently, humanity is consuming resources equivalent to 1.8 Earths, far beyond what the planet can regenerate. Solanki insists that sustainability is not a vague moral choice; it is a mathematical necessity.

“Finite Earth → Finite Consumption” is the equation he champions, emphasizing that our planet’s resources are limited, and therefore, our consumption must be limited too.

Through campaigns like #WeNeedHalf, he calls on individuals to reduce their carbon footprint in tangible, everyday ways — from using half the toothpaste, to buying fewer clothes, to minimizing travel. His approach reframes sustainability as a clear, achievable target.

Letters to the Nation’s Leaders

In one of his most courageous acts, Prof. Solanki wrote 1,000 letters — one for every Member of Parliament, including the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition, and cabinet ministers.

In these letters, he appeals to the moral and constitutional responsibility of elected representatives to act decisively on the climate crisis.

“Even if there were the slightest chance that these warnings are true, it deserves our full attention — because what is at stake is not a political issue, but the very survivability of our people,” he wrote.

These letters underline an urgent truth: once the 2°C global warming threshold is crossed, no policy or technology will be able to reverse the damage. At the current pace, this threshold could be reached between 2045 and 2050 — within our own lifetimes.

From Equations to Action: Inspiring a Climate-Conscious India

Solanki’s initiatives span from grassroots action to national-scale campaigns.

  • The Indore Climate Mission, launched with the Municipal Corporation, achieved a remarkable reduction of 1.51 crore units of electricity in just two months.
  • FEM Talks, modeled after TED Talks, aims to bring together individuals who share stories of “finite living” — inspiring others to live meaningfully within limits.
  • His Rs. 1 per plant initiative promotes natural, low-cost seed planting methods that rely on nature’s nurturing power rather than human intervention.

Each project reinforces the same fundamental principle: small actions by individuals can collectively create monumental change.

A Voice of Conscience in a Warming World

Prof. Solanki’s words cut through the noise of greenwashing and token pledges. When people tell him to “stay positive,” he responds:

“How can I call a disaster anything but a disaster? The only agenda on everyone’s table should be — how to tackle climate change.”

He emphasizes that government policies alone cannot solve the crisis, because each person who consumes energy is part of the problem — and must be part of the solution.

The Road Ahead: Energy Swaraj Yatra 2.0

Starting 30th October 2025, Energy Swaraj Yatra 2.0 marks the continuation of his journey — more miles, more people, more conversations. His goal is to create a public movement of billions, each individual taking responsibility for reducing their own impact on the planet.

“This journey is not mine alone, but yours too. Climate change is a collective problem — it demands collective action.”

Why His Mission Matters — Now More Than Ever

The urgency in Prof. Solanki’s mission reflects the global reality: floods, heatwaves, and cyclones are no longer distant warnings — they are today’s headlines. The finite nature of Earth’s resources is no longer a theory; it’s a lived experience.

If the world continues at its current rate of consumption, by 2050, we could face a planet warmed beyond repair.

In such times, voices like Prof. Solanki’s are not just inspiring — they are essential. His message reminds us that the solution does not lie only in policy, but in personal transformation — in living simply, consuming consciously, and acting collectively.

From Awareness to Action

Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki’s journey is not a campaign; it’s a way of life — one that urges humanity to rediscover balance with nature.

Through the Energy Swaraj Foundation and Finite Earth Movement, he shows that true sustainability is about justice — for the planet, for the poor, and for future generations.

His vision for India — and the world — is simple, yet revolutionary:

“Let us leave behind not only a developed nation, but a livable planet for our children.”
