15th August 2024 – On the eve on Independence Day. Hon’ble Deputy CM Smt. Prabhati Parida had announced period leaves or menstrual leaves for the women of Odisha who are working on the Government and Private Sectors. We welcome this step. After Kerala and Bihar, Odisha becomes the 3rd state to implement this. 1 day leave can be availed by the women of the state either on the 1st day or 2nd day.
A menstrual leave policy, also known as a period leave policy, allows women to take time off work during their menstrual cycle without using regular sick leave or vacation days. This policy acknowledges the physical and emotional challenges that some women experience during menstruation, providing them with the flexibility to rest and recover as needed.

Key Points of a Menstrual Leave Policy:
1. Paid or Unpaid Leave: The policy can offer paid or unpaid leave specifically for menstrual health. In Odisha’s case its a Paid Leave.
2. Flexible Duration: Typically, the leave can range from one to two days per month, depending on the organization’s discretion. In Odisha’s case its 1 day leave which can be taken either on the 1st day or 2nd day.
3. Confidentiality: Ensuring privacy and sensitivity when handling leave requests to maintain the dignity and comfort of the employees. Here, State Government of Odisha needs to be sensitive and prepare SOPs and sensitize employers and decision makers.
4. Inclusive Language: The policy should use inclusive language to accommodate all who menstruate.
5. No Documentation Required: To respect privacy, employees should not need to provide medical proof or extensive documentation.
6. Education and Awareness: Promoting awareness within the organization to reduce stigma and support those who need menstrual leave.
7. Voluntary Use: The policy should be optional, allowing employees to choose whether or not to use it.
8. Integration with Wellness Programs: The leave can be part of a broader wellness program aimed at supporting employees’ overall health.
Such a policy can contribute to a more supportive and inclusive workplace, improving employee well-being and productivity.
